FEBRUARY 2010

Ahhhh.  The season of love.  Or so we're told by the massive corporate greeting card companies!  If anything, February 14th provides me with a great platform for this month's soapbox speech!   :)   From about 270 AD when St. Valentine sent a note to the woman he fell in love with (supposedly his jailor's daughter) declaring his love for her and signed,  From Your Valentine, we've been sending sweet sentiments to those we adore.   This month I'd like to turn the table a bit.  I'd like for you to be YOUR own sweet Valentine!  For years I've watched women scrutinize every segment of their body, every crease, fold, line, every limb, every fiber of their being.  Yes, I will completely admit, that I HAVE BEEN just as guilty as the rest of you with my negative self bashing.  In fact, there are days when I feel I may possibly be the leader of hiprocracy.  I've watched for 20+ years as we dissect every flaw, every weakness, every fault until there is nothing left.   But I will also admit, the times that I put myself under a microscope to look at my physical flaws are far and few between now.  The older I get, I suppose the wiser I do become. I have come to appreciate my body for what it can do instead of what I think it should look like.  So, my fellow woman warriors, this month's mental challenge is simply this.  I would like for you to write a love letter to yourself.  There's a catch. . . . I want you to write a Valentine to the specific physical flaw that you beat yourself up over the most. Remind yourself what about that appendage you love.   And yes, I will be joining you on this endeavor. My love letter will be written to my beloved quads.  I have come to accept the fact that I will never wear designer jeans and that teen age boy's pants fit almost perfectly!   I will shower them with appreciation for the thousands of miles of pavement they have pounded, for the way they kick, knee and slam their way through Muay Thai classes.  So ladies,  let's learn to love the vessel we've been blessed with.  Get out your pink and red paper, your doilies and glue stick and shower yourselves with sweet nothings. You're worth it.

power on,
janine

P.O.W.E.R. Punchcards go PINK
It's a pretty safe bet that to say I am passionate about women's health issues is an understatement!!!  There are a few issues that are very near and dear to my heart. Cancer is one of them. Especially breast cancer. I have been afforded the wonderful opportunity of knowing a remarkable woman who has become one of my heroes when it comes to overcoming adversity. Her name is Wendy.  Wendy has not only battled cancer once, but THREE times and won!! Her relentless will and drive is truly inspirational. She continues to give and give and give.  Wendy is not only an activist for the AVON walks for breast cancer but she was also last year's spokeswoman. She has already participated in several walks and raised thousands of dollars.  This year, she has set a goal that is even massive for this remarkable woman. By this year's end she will have walked 78.6 miles putting her total to SEVEN Avon Walks!!! If I do my math right, that gives her 275 miles pounding the pavement (this doesn't include the hundreds of miles training!!).  With every walk Wendy needs to raise $1800. This year she is planning on walking in DC's Avon Walk May 1st and 2nd and Charlotte's walk in October. So she's looking at $3600.  Anything POWER can do pales in comparison to what Wendy has done for other women diagnosed with breast cancer.  But we will try!!!  I have created the POWER PINK 1 class punchcard! Each PINK POWER card is worth one class. You can purchase a PINK POWER punchcard for $15 (limit 1 punchcard per client).  100% of the profits will go directly to Wendy's walks.  So stop in, purchase your pink power punchcard and help Wendy change someone's life.

Why P.O.W.E.R.?
Over the past few weeks I've received numerous phone calls from women inquiring about POWER? How is the training any different? What's a "pod"? Since the topic is so very near and dear to my heart, I simply cannot give an objective answer. The last few months I've received numerous personal testimonials.  Let POWER clients do the talking. . .

"I'm an expert at making excuses not to exercise. I have three kids, a full time job, and little time to myself. As a last resort - since nothing else seemed to work - I signed up with Janine. What a difference it's made. I met some great people in my pod who cheer me on when I"m making progress, and when I think I can't move another muscle. I run farther than I've ever run in my life. Janine makes the hardest workouts fun because she supports all of us every step of the way. She's made me realize that we all have the P.O.W.E.R. to work harder. Now I know I won't die when I'm completely out of breath. I know I can run a little bit more, I can swing a heavier kettlebell. After each workout, I go home happy that I pushed myself beyond my limits, once again. And I never would have done this without Janine."  -D.G.

"Working out in the pod format has been a life changing experience.  The amazingly strong women I have met who have enriched my life...in addition to the numerous compliments I get on my arms and shoulders.  Janine's format has transformed my body in a way I was not able to do on my own or with any other trainer.  I am sure I will be a pod member until the day I die!"  -D.H.

"Lessons Learned at 6am"
"Although I have casually worked out at a variety of gyms over the years, I have never been the athletic type. Exercise has been a necessary component of years of weight fluctuation for me, and making the decision to join a pod was no different. I considered it simply a means to an end. My enthusiasm for committing to the pod was quickly overshadowed by fear and anxiety as I showed up for my first session. The exercises were difficult at best, and clearly I was working out with what I would call the serious athletes. Fighting the urge to give up, with Janine’s encouragement, I pressed on and have never looked back. Over the course of the last four months, not only has my perspective on fitness been completely transformed but the lessons I have learned have totally changed me.

An outstanding trainer makes all the difference. Janine works tirelessly to develop challenging programs for her clients, differentiating in order to meet all the needs of each individual in the group. She has a keen sense of when I need to be pushed and when I need to back off in order to avoid injury. Janine possesses a deep passion for seeing her clients succeed, and she pours her heart and soul into her pods. Her years of education and commitment to continuous improvement mean we get the most current and relevant training each time we step into the gym.

We are stronger than we give ourselves credit for!!  Working with five other women to achieve personal fitness goals is so powerful!  Although we are all at different stages physically, the help and support I receive from Janine as well as the other members of the pod has propelled me forward. As out of shape as I was physically, I was more out of shape mentally. Pod training not only helps women push themselves physically but, just as important, trains us mentally in order to help us believe in ourselves. When I began pod training, I was barely able to complete the exercises. Four months later, I can run four miles, and I have set and achieved many of my personal fitness goals.

We are worth this investment in ourselves!! When I analyzed my budget, I quickly realized that I spend much more money on things that do not contribute positively to my health and wellness. We are willing to spend our money on things which do not positively impact us-food, drink, or activities that don’t promote an active lifestyle. The money I spend on the pod training each month is a small investment in my long term health, and I am worth it!

The pod is a chance to redefine the way you see fitness. Since fitness has always been something I have to do in order to lose weight, I never really focused on changing my behavior from the inside out. My participation in the pod has given me purpose in my exercise. It has taught me perseverance, to never give up-no matter how hard it gets. For the first time, the number on the scale is not my primary focus. Because Janine has taught me how to truly change my lifestyle, I am finally able to focus on good nutrition and exercise. Watching the number on the scale decrease over time has been an added bonus!

Fitness and health comes in all shapes and sizes. We do not have to be a size 2 in order to be fit and healthy!! Committing to achieving lofty fitness goals and then following through in order to meet those goals has been nothing short of inspirational. I approach every day with a new confidence as a result of my participation in the pod. "  -L.P.

"I am a homeschooling mother of four.  My life has been badly out of alignment as my focus has been either family or church or husband, not always taking care of myself. I have been exercising off and on for the last ten years, through pregnancies, toddlerhood, etc. I have not always seen or felt different, until now. I have been in the POWER pods this summer. I really do have more energy for the grueling tasks of motherhood. I feel better about myself. I can see more definition in my muscles. I am thankful to have found these POD workouts and Janine.  She is truly inspiring women to believe in themselves and know deep down that they can be stonger for life!"  -W.B.

"For years I “watched” Janine from the balcony as she led kickboxing classes, while I read a book on my stationary bike or jogged leisurely on the treadmill.  The folks in her class were really working hard for her. I was intrigued and totally intimidated.  While I was pregnant with my 3rd child, I overheard her at the end of the class talking about her boys and I realized she was actually a mom…and not just a crazy fitness junkie.  I decided to check out a class.  She pushed our class (and me) physically very hard, but she was actually very encouraging and did not “call me out” so I went back.  Every time I went to Janine’s classes I realized that there was something uniquely different about her approach to health, fitness, and women, and I wanted to go back and be around her to try and figure it out!    After I had my 3rd child I asked my husband for a few personal sessions with Janine.  I have really never fully been able to figure out a healthy life style when it comes to food and exercise but I felt like if anyone would have some answers it would be Janine!  Honestly that first session I was super excited and totally intimidated because I knew how she had a reputation that she would “push” you.  Was I going to throw up?  Cry?  (I had watched too many seasons of “The Biggest Loser”!)   Here was the real question:  why was I so frightened to be pushed?  Had I ever really pushed myself physically before?  Had I ever really worked hard?  I found the answer to be a resounding NO! I appreciated her P.O.W.E.R perspective and really that it is a totally mind, body, and spirit experience.   After working with Janine I can honestly say that I will never be the same.  The first few times I went I would ask her, “why are you not laughing at me?  I bet I look ridiculous trying to do a simple task she asked of me but in my weakness and lack of strength, flexibility, I was completely incapable of what she was asking me to do.  Janine was patient and kind and just encouraged me to try.  She also pushed me to places that I never dreamed possible in 5 short sessions.  Thanks to Janine’s help, I found a woman that I did not know existed.   A very strong woman with inner mental strength who is able to complete very challenging physical feats.   She was always there, Janine just helped her come out of hiding!   I found that there are no excuses.  (I was a nursing mom of a 4 month old who was still not sleeping through the night when I first started seeing Janine.  If anyone deserved a break wasn’t it me?) I found that fitness is not about a means to an end…it is about personal life-long transformation.  I found that push-ups and burpees are actually a woman’s best friend.  I learned that bulking up is a total myth.  I learned that Janine eats a bowl of ice cream every night with her family!!  I found a lifestyle change was the only option and that it was going to take hard work and commitment to really achieve those life long goals.  I cannot express the gratitude that I feel in my heart for this woman and for POWER…I fully expected a drill sergeant when I walked in to her gym, but found a strong courageous encouraging friend! "  J.C.

"Janine has completely changed my attitude towards fitness.  No longer
am I a slave to the group fitness schedule at the gym, no longer does
a bad week of classes mean no good workouts for me.   I am no longer
just trying to punch my "workout card" every day, but want to improve
my fitness with each workout.  As someone who gets bored very easily,
I LOVE that Janine is always switching it up with new and fresh
workouts.  I am not someone that wants to run or bike for an hour,
and then have to do another 30-40 minutes of strength training.  Who
has time for that every day?  Janine's workouts are designed to give
you the maximum benefit without taking up huge chunks of time.  I can
work my entire body, strength and cardio, with a POWER workout in
less than an hour.  So basically I spend LESS time working out, but
my fitness level has IMPROVED.  Who doesn't love that?" -R.B., Cary
